15 October 2013: Non-provisional patent application to USPTO for a Steering Unit for a Rotary Steerable Tool

Steering Unit - RST

Shield OilTech's first patent pending invention is a Steering Unit for Rotary Steerable Tools used in directional drilling for oil.

The Steering Unit is being designed from the ground up with a novel approach:

No preconceived idea

The basic objectives of directional drilling for oil specifies the requirements for a novel steering unit.

The main objectives of this steering units are:

  • Simple design and actuation scheme with fewer parts to assemble = less expensive
  • Drilling curvatures 5 to 10 degrees per 100 feet = meet most market demands
  • Reliable with less failures while drilling = reduced drilling rig downtime = less money spent to drill
  • Easily maintainable with fewer parts to change (wear parts, simple design and access) = less expensive and quicker redeployment of the SU in the field
  • Scalable to all sizes of Rotary Steerable Tools for holes from 5-1/2" to 18" = rational RST family
  • Adaptable to any RST Control Units with minimum redesign efforts = minimal time to market

The Intellectual Property on this invention is being secured through a non-provisional patent application at the United States Patent and Trademark Offices. Patent has been applied for on 15 October 2013 and is currently pending.

Shield OilTech is interested in securing investment and/or partnership in order to pursue the development of this steering unit.
